PE and Sport Premium

Risby CEVC Primary School receives an annual PE & Sport Premium from the Department for Education (DfE), which is used to make additional and sustainable improvements to the quality of physical education, physical activity and sport that we offer all of our children.

The PE & Sport Premium has been invaluable in helping us to develop and add to the PE, physical activity and sport activities that the school already offered and, when determining how we will spend it, we are always mindful that the improvements we make now, must benefit pupils who join the school in future years.

The Chief Medical Officer guidelines recommend that all children and young people aged 5-18 years should engage in at least 60 minutes of physical activity a day, of which 30 minutes should be in school, and we strive to achieve this by using the PE & Sport Premium to:

  • Engage all pupils in regular physical activity;
  • Raise the profile of PE and sport across the school;
  • Increase our staff's confidence, knowledge and skills in teaching PE and sport;
  • Offer a broader experience of a range of sports and activities to all pupils;
  • Increase our participation in competitive sport.

Swimming: Year 6 2018-2019

By July 2019, 67% of our Year 6 children were able to swim competently, confidently and proficiently over a distance of at least 25 metres; to use a range of strokes effectively and to perform safe self-rescue in different water-based situations.

In order to improve this attainment data in future years, we now allocate PE & Sport Premium to provide top-up swimming lessons for all KS2 students, once they have completed core swimming lessons in Year 3. Pupils in KS2 now attend weekly swimming lessons at the Abbeycroft Leisure Centre as follows:

  • Year 3: Summer Term
  • Year 4: Autumn Term
  • Year 5 & Year 6: Spring Term
